The Blocking of .xxx can be good for the adult entertainment industry

A couple days ago ICANN voted against the creation of the .xxx internet address for the third time. Among the reasons cited, one claimed that the new address did not have the support of the adult entertainment industry. Though lawmakers, the company seeking the domain name, and members of ICANN are coming out and expressing their dissappointment with the boards decision, there are some interesting thoughts floating around with those who support the decision.

Porn sites have carefully withdrawn support for the .xxx address because they have seen the slippery slope associated with it. The .xxx makes it easier for its use to be mandated from the government in the future. The Adult entertainment industry believes that adult content could be pushed here by the government and describes this possibilty as becoming an "online ghetto" of sorts. They do have a point because who knows the future of the internet, it could very well turn out the way they fear if the .xxx is approved.
